The Emotions and feelings of a person with cancer are important

The Emotions and feelings of a person with cancer are important

A cancer diagnosis is an emotionally difficult time for both the patient and their family. We know that feelings and emotions can have a great impact on the patient’s health and treatment outcomes. Patients with good coping skills and a positive attitude seem to do better than those that don’t.

One of the best ways to help a cancer patient is to have good communication because when there is no communication it can lead to isolation, frustration, and misunderstandings. It is important to understand what the appropriate moments are to have a conversation with the patients, to talk about their health, to make them feel that they have someone to help them, and to express their feelings.

Likewise, it is necessary to have support from the patient’s family, thus, they would not feel excluded. Participating in family activities and being treated as a loved member of the family are very important aspects to take into consideration.

In addition, it is necessary to understand what situations are emotionally affecting the patient. Some common emotions that a cancer patient may experience include feelings of sadness, stress, anger, anxiety, depression, fear of the side effects of the disease, and guilt. Professional help and support groups are appropriate strategies if necessary.

Finally, it is important to understand that people with cancer begin to have physical limitations, such as not eating, walking, low mood (depression). In these circumstances, it is necessary to make the patient feel that they have support and that they feel like an important person to their loved ones and near ones.

In addition, patients who are actively involved in taking charge in their own care, researching treatment options to fight their disease seem to have a better attitude and feel more in control. This also seems to help put the patient in a better state of mind. We certainly know that the mental state can greatly affect the immune response, which is important to help beat this disease. Keeping hope and knowing that more treatment options exist and the cure has never been closer.

Camu Camu

Camu Camu

Camu Camu is an Amazonian fruit rich in polyphenols, compounds found in plants known for their antioxidant and health benefits with protective effects against obesity and diabetes. Recently studies have been made discussing its effect on cancer.

One of the polyphenols found in Camu Camu is Castalagin; this polyphenol acts as a prebiotic, modifies gut microbiome, and improves immunotherapy response, according to a Canadian Study *. It has de prebiotic potential to enrich Akkermansia muciniphila, a bacterium shown to alleviate metabolic disorders and improve Immune-checkpoints inhibitors.

Oral supplementation with Castalagin in mice shifted gut microbial composition, which translated into antitumor activity and stronger anti-PD1 (programmed death cell protein 1) response.

With this background, new clinical studies are being made to prove the efficacy of Camu Camu’s castalagin anti-cancer effect in patients with non-small cell lung cancer and metastatic melanoma.

TIPS TO IMPROVE YOUR IMMUNITY

TIPS TO IMPROVE YOUR IMMUNITY

To improve immunity, we must consider it necessary to lead a healthy life by enhancing our eating habits. Exercising and eating well, with organic fresh food, avoiding preservatives and artificial sweeteners. Avoiding too much alcohol and not smoking are certainly factors.
The microbiome is a significant factor that influences the immune state of a person. The gut microbiome, the bacteria in the intestines, is influenced by our diet. A diverse microbiome with many types of bacteria is generally the most beneficial. This is associated with a high-fiber diet of at least 50 grams daily. You have to be cautious in not taking too many external probiotics that contain bacteria. Though adding certain types of bacteria may be beneficial in some cases, too much can lower the microbiome’s diversity.
After the diet, some vitamins and supplements may be beneficial. Vitamin D can bind to receptors on many cell types of the immune system, helping both the innate (non-specific) and adaptive (specific) immune response. It is also involved with antigen presentation, which is crucial to the anti-cancer immune response. Another nutrient is zinc, which is needed for the growth of immune cells. Selenium is another nutrient essential for regulating immune proteins, but you must be cautious as too much is probably harmful. Beta-glucan, turkey tail mushroom and modified citrus pectin are others to consider.
When it comes to cancer, there is a balance in the immune system,  The immune system both attacks and can protect and help cancer. The immune system has the job of attacking and protecting us from harmful foreign substances but also limiting us from attacking ourselves and developing autoimmune diseases. Cancer uses this protection against autoimmune disease in its favor to have the immune system protect and help it. Cancer is technically part of your body, and the immune system is supposed to protect your body. For this reason, we want to tip the immune system toward cancer-attacking, not cancer-defending. This is often where cancer immunotherapy drugs come into play, blocking or activating specific receptors to alert the immune system that cancer is an enemy, not our friend. There are rapid developments in this area as our knowledge of the immune system doubles almost every year. The cure has never been so close.

New Immunotherapy Combination Improves Survival in Metastatic Lung Cancer by 63%

New Immunotherapy Combination Improves Survival in Metastatic Lung Cancer by 63%

Nowadays the current standard immunotherapy treatment has a survival progression of 7.7 months, while in the GECP study, it reached 13 months. The Spanish Lung Cancer Group (GECP), for its initials in Spanish “Grupo Español de Cáncer de Pulmón”, has verified that a new combination of immunotherapy improves the survival of patients with advanced metastatic lung cancer by 63% and whose results have just been published in the journal ‘JAMA Oncology’.

The GECP study, called ‘Telma’, selected patients with advanced metastatic lung cancer who were candidates for immunotherapy and who, in addition, could be given a new pharmacological combination by adding anti-angiogenic that would enhance the action of immunotherapy.

In this sense, the president of the GECP and lead author of the study, Dr. Mariano Provencio, explains “currently we select patients who are candidates for immunotherapy based on whether they have a high expression of the PDL1 gene. This limits us since only between 20% and 30% of these patients have that gene”.

According to those mentioned above, with the new approach proposed by the ‘Telma’ study, the GECP researchers believe that more patients will benefit from immunotherapy.

The data on response to treatment and survival from the ‘Telma” study improve the current standard. “We have verified that the combination of ‘atezolizumab’ with ‘bevacizumab’ as the first line of treatment in patients with advanced lung cancer and high mutational load increases survival rates, with long-lasting responses to treatment and a favorable safety and toxicity profile”, details the expert.

Thus, with the current standard treatment, progression-free survival is 7.7 months, while in the GECP study, 13 months are reached, 63% more. In addition, 72% of the patients participating in the study survived during the first year.

Therefore, Dr. Provencio highlights that “the findings suggest that this new approach could be added to the potential treatments for this population group. Obviously, it is a phase II academic study and should lead to additional studies to confirm it.”

With this study, the Spanish GECP researchers provide information on a new way of selecting patients with metastatic lung cancer for monotherapy (without chemotherapy) and a new treatment combination.

ANTICANCER AND COAGULANT PROPERTIES OF TURKEY TAIL MUSHROOM

ANTICANCER AND COAGULANT PROPERTIES OF TURKEY TAIL MUSHROOM

There is much talk about the antimicrobial, antiviral and antitumor activity, the anticancer and immune activating properties of Coriolus Versicolor or turkey tail mushroom, these occur due to two extracts from the mycelium culture (thread-shaped extensions). These extracts are protein-bound polysaccharides known as Polysaccharides K (PSK) and Peptide Polysaccharides (PSP).

Turkey tail mushroom has been researched for its potential to stimulate immune system functions, so it is believed to be ideal for minimizing the risk of acquiring major illnesses, as well as if a person has experienced an illness such as cancer and it is found in a type of treatment for it such as immunotherapy, it is also highly recommended to improve the immune system.

Since ancient times it has been prepared in infusions and extracts as a complement to care for health, this fungus grows on organic bases such as the trunks of trees, from which it obtains its food, this fungus has a characteristic and it is because of its striking colors, which range from dark brown parts to blackish and green areas.

In traditional Chinese medicine, the turkey tail mushroom is considered a powerful immunomodulator due to its interesting nutritional composition. Supplements derived from this fungus are used as adjuvants against various chronic diseases, such as cancer.

It is a popular remedy with a long history in natural medicine. Its content in bioactive molecules has been valued to stimulate the functions of the immune system and protect the body against infectious processes and chronic diseases.

In recent studies, an oral dose of 3 grams has been established, with a duration range of between 28 days and 3 years, just as Coriolus Versicolor extracts can be taken as an infusion, capsules, or pills.

Cranberries anti-cancer effect

Cranberries anti-cancer effect

Cranberries are proven to have anti-oxidative, anti-inflammatory, antibiotic, neuro, and cardioprotective properties, and recent studies have demonstrated cancer inhibition properties.

Its mechanisms of cancer inhibition include:

– Cellular death induction via apoptosis

– Necrosis

– Autophagy

– Reduction of cellular proliferation

– Alteration in reactive oxygen species

– Cell density and viability

– Adhesion

– Migration

– Signal and transduction pathways

These effects are attributable to the berries’ rich phytonutrient composition, which includes three flavonoid classes: anthocyanins, flavonols, and proanthocyanidins.

Cranberries are a good source of Resveratol, which increases the cytotoxic effects of radiation treatment and drugs such as Doxorubicin and Paclitaxel in breast cancer; it also inhibits aromatase, which essential for reducing growth-stimulatory effects in estrogen-dependent breast cancer. And Resveratol has been shown to help protect against cisplatin-induced ovarian and uterine damage.

Myricetin, also found in cranberries, has shown its effectiveness in triggering apoptosis in hormone receptor-positive (ER+/PR+) breast cancer cells.

Quercetin flavonol has been shown to increase the effect of Doxorubicin and Paclitaxel chemotherapy in multidrug-resistant ER+/PR+ breast cancer cells by eliminating cancer stem cells. It has also significantly inhibited a mouse model’s tumor progression, migration, and adhesion.

In vitro studies support that cranberries successfully inhibit three hallmarks of cancer: resisting cell death, sustaining proliferative signaling, and activating invasion and metastasis.

The study of the use of cranberry in cancer prevention and treatment is in its early stages. More evidence and studies on its mechanism of action and its effect on tumor cells are needed to support its use in the battle against cancer.

LEARN MORE ABOUT IMMUNOTHERAPY

LEARN MORE ABOUT IMMUNOTHERAPY

Unlike traditional cancer treatments that directly attack cancer cells, Allison and de Honjo researched about how to help patients whose own immune system defeat cancer more quickly.

Immunotherapy is a type of cancer treatment that stimulates the body’s natural defenses. “It uses substances made by our body or made in a laboratory to improve or restore the function of the immune system.”

Immunotherapy is less toxic, is more targeted and represents an improvement in quality of life in relation to chemotherapy. In addition, the side effects are less than chemotherapy in terms of alopecia, decrease in white blood cells, asthenia, or anorexia.

Theoretically any cancer can be treated with immunotherapy. The first attempts at immunological manipulation began 100 years ago but there have been clinical studies, especially in the last five years, where an impact on the survival of cancer patients has been demonstrated with new therapies that are transforming the lives of these patients at the same time while helping to conduct future research.

Since 2014, when the therapeutic advance was considered, two products were marketed with a specific indication for metastatic melanoma and lung cancer with survival benefits where there are few therapeutic options.

Since then, a clinical benefit has been shown in a variety of tumors such as head and neck cancer, lung cancer, bladder cancer, kidney cancer, breast cancer, melanoma and other skin cancers, liver cancer, lymphomas, leukemias, currently existing clinical trials for the rest of the tumors. This benefit has been observed in the metastatic phase of these tumors, which has generated high expectations that it can be incorporated in earlier phases of the disease to increase the possibility of cure.

Curcumin’s anti-cancerous activity

Curcumin’s anti-cancerous activity

For over 5000 years plants have been used as medicine and therapies and nowadays a fair amount of modern medicine is directly or indirectly derived for plants. There are many plant-derived compounds that can induce apoptosis in cells; these compounds are non-toxic for our body and are capable of boosting apoptotic pathways.
Curcumin found in turmeric has been found to have many properties including anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant, and anti-carcinogenic. The influence of Curcumin in treating cancer relies on its effect on cell proliferation, cell survival, caspase activation, death receptors, mitochondrial, protein kinase and tumor suppression pathways; so through this interactions, its able to suppress tumor cells initiation, progression and metastasis.
One of its best qualities is that curcumin is toxic for cancer yet cytoprotective for normal cells, making it universal for all kind of cancer cells, proving positive effects on breast, lung, prostate, pancreatic, oral, colorectal, multiple myeloma and head and neck squamous cell carcinoma
Also, it’s been shown that people from southwest Asia who regularly consume turmeric in their diet, have the lowest incidence of any type of cancer.
Despite its actual mechanism against cancer is still unknown so far it has demonstrated to be a good, natural and safe adjuvant in cancer treatment.

COLORECTAL CANCER IS ONE OF THE MOST DEADLY

COLORECTAL CANCER IS ONE OF THE MOST DEADLY

It has been known that colorectal colon cancer claimed the lives of 935,000 people in 2020, according to the WHO (World Health Organization).

This type of cancer affects the lower intestinal portions of the digestive system, the colon, and the rectum. Moreover, tumors can develop anywhere in the colon or rectum. If colorectal cancer cells spread outside of the colon or rectum, they often travel to nearby lymph nodes, sometimes called lymph glands. Colorectal cancer can also spread to other parts of the body, especially the liver, and sometimes to the lungs, bones, and other organs.

Some of the symptoms of colorectal cancer are:

Diarrhea or constipation.
Feeling that the intestine is not empty completely.
Blood in the feces.
Frequent gas pains or cramps.
Weight loss for no reason.
Fatigue.
Nausea or vomiting.

The risk of developing colorectal cancer is related to family precedent. Compared with the general population, people with a family precedent of colorectal cancer deal with a double risk of developing the disease.

Most patients with this disease and older than 50 years are diagnosed in the early stages, but in 2019 the NCI, national cancer institute, studies revealed that the majority of younger patients and survivors of this disease, 71%, said they were diagnosed in the advanced stages of 3 and 4.

Besides, the American Cancer Society updated its colorectal cancer screening guidelines in 2018 to recommend that average-risk adults be screened starting at age 45 instead of 50, as previously advised. Screening options can range from having a highly sensitive fecal test annually to having a colonoscopy every 10 years.

Colorectal cancer is highly treatable if detected early. The American Cancer Society reduced the recommended age to start screening from 50 to 45 in 2018. Tests can detect precancerous growths and remove them. Also, the treatment for this type of cancer includes surgery, radiation therapy, and chemotherapy.

Finally, a study published in 2019 established that anal cancer cases and deaths are increasing dramatically in the United States, especially among older people and young black men. From 2001 to 2015, cases of the most common type of anal cancer increased by 2.7% per year, while anal cancer death rates increased by 3.1% per year from 2001 to 2016.

Apoptosis

Apoptosis

We discussed drugs and supplements that help your body against its battle with cancer, and
we mentioned apoptosis. But what exactly is apoptosis, and why it’s essential to achieve
this in the treatments? The definition provided by the National Cancer Institute is “a type
of cell death in which a series of molecular steps in a cell lead to its death. This is one method
the body uses to eliminate unneeded or abnormal cells.”
So, every cell in our body has its date of death programmed as it is born; when cancer
appears, it creates and activates a lot of mechanisms known as Hallmarks of Cancer – a set
of functional capabilities acquired by human cells as they make their way from typically to
neoplastic growth states -. One of these capabilities is the mechanism to resist programmed
cell death with the overexpression of antiapoptotic proteins and under-expression of
proapoptotic proteins, enabling cancer cells’ “immortality,” giving cancer more time to
produce mutations that increase invasiveness during tumor progression.
Therefore, one of the things we aim for with the different types of immunotherapies is the
effective elimination of cancer cells by apoptosis; some anti-cancer agents directly target
apoptotic pathways. Targeting apoptosis is effective for all types of cancer as apoptosis is
nonspecific to the cause of the type of cancer. Two common strategies for therapeutic
targeting are the stimulation of proapoptotic molecules and the inhibition of antiapoptotic
ones.
As of now, no antiapoptotic therapy stands out from other ones; aiming this pathway is an
effective option as it is universal for all cancer types. Many plant-derived compounds have
been studied to have an apoptotic effect that is nontoxic to healthy cells.

Triple Immunotherapy Targeting 41BB, LAG3 and CXCR1/CXCR2 Shows Excellent Response In Pancreatic Cancer

Triple Immunotherapy Targeting 41BB, LAG3 and CXCR1/CXCR2 Shows Excellent Response In Pancreatic Cancer

One of the areas that will result in a high percentage of future cures is combination immunotherapy.  It is clear that one drug is not enough; cancer will get around it.  It is also clear that combination immunotherapy given intravenously to the whole body will increase toxicity.  These combinations will need to mainly be injected into a tumor to teach the local immune cells to attack it.  Surprisingly, this is not just a local response but a global anti-cancer immune response potentially attacking cancer throughout the body.  The one question is, what are the most effective combinations?  We have done work with many, and a new study published by Gulhati et al. has shed even more light on a triple-drug combo for pancreatic cancer.  Pancreatic cancer is resistant and is an excellent proving ground for cancer treatment.  If you can treat pancreatic cancer, other cancer should respond, as it is one of the more resistant cancers.

Most standard immunotherapy is focused on PD-1 inhibitors, such as Opdivo or Keytruda, or CTLA-4 inhibitors, such as Yervoy.  This current article shows, as already known, that these drugs have little activity in pancreatic cancer.  Most research in a key immunotherapy for pancreatic cancer has been around an agent CD40.  The study by Gulhati from MD Anderson was published in Nature Cancer, titled “Targeting T cell checkpoints 41BB and LAG3 and myeloid cell CXCR1/CXCR2 results in antitumoral immunity and durable response in pancreatic cancer.”  This study shows an exciting combination and makes a fundamental discovery.

Many of us had already been studying and using 41BB and LAG3.  In pancreatic cancer, we had also seen success with CD40 agonists.  The results were good, but there is always room for improvement.  One area lacking is targeting myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSC).  Though we have some drugs and off-label medications that help, we need something better.  In this study, the experimental drug SX-682 plus 41BB agonist and LAG3 antagonist seemed to do the trick in the animal model with a 90% cure rate.  To avoid getting too complex with the explanation, if you have read my book, you know that MDSCs are immune cells that protect against cancer.  They can shut off the immune response.  When you use standard immunotherapy drugs to turn on the immune response against cancer, these are a group of immune cells that can shut it down.  Most immunotherapy, especially standard FDA-approved medications of today, focuses more on the T cells and does not address MDSC. It is a gaping hole in current cancer immunotherapy.  Though you may get an initial immune response going, in most cases, it will get shut down, and MDSC can play a significant role in that.

For this reason, you need combinations to affect the immune response at many angles.  The drug SX-682 inhibits CXCR1/2, which are chemokine receptors that recruit MDSC.  There are still many ways cancer can shut off the immune response; in reality, it may take even more extensive combinations to obtain a cure in a high percentage of patients.  There are so many immunotherapy agents in studies now that we have the weapons; we need to deploy them appropriately.

HOW TO STRENGTHEN THE IMMUNE SYSTEM?

HOW TO STRENGTHEN THE IMMUNE SYSTEM?

There are different ways to avoid the appearance of diseases, and one of them is the strengthening of the immune system since it is our defense system against microorganisms such as fungi, bacteria, and viruses that cause diseases, such as cancer.

The proper functioning of the immune system depends a lot on a good diet that helps to strengthen it. There are some situations that cause the immune system to be affected, for example, stress and anxiety, both cause a failure of the immune system. Moreover, some diseases appear, sometimes serious because the body is unable to fight microorganisms.

There are ways to know that the immune system is not working well, the appearance of infections, fevers, dry eyes, chronic tiredness, nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, spots on the skin, and hair loss. We can also know that the immune system is working badly through diagnostic blood tests, these tests must be recommended by a specialist.

There are habits that are essential when it comes to strengthening our immune system, as well as others that affect the immune system even more. In addition, the lack of physical activity, alcohol consumption, cigarette use, and unhealthy eating are some of these bad habits.

Likewise, there are special nutrients that help maintain an optimal immune system such as copper, iron, selenium, zinc, magnesium, vitamin B6, vitamin B12, vitamin C, vitamin E, vitamin D, and vitamin A.

There are also foods that can help strengthen the immune system, for example: include herbs in the daily diet, natural seasonings such as garlic, onion, turmeric, oregano, kion, foods rich in the vitamins mentioned above, foods rich in fiber since this helps to care for and strengthen the bacterial flora, take probiotics and prebiotics, avoid the consumption of sugar, processed foods, as well as fried foods.
